To what extent did Madison and Warren agree about who stood to benefit and who stood to lose if the U.S. Constitution was ratified?
As always, support your assessment with evidence from the documents and in relation to your colleagues' interpretations.
Did the U.S. Constitution represent a continuation of the republican spirit that had previously guided the American Revolution, or did it constitute a departure from that spirit? Put another way, might we describe the U.S. Constitution as counter-revolutionary---as a move away from the fundamental values of the Revolution (that had been in place up to 1787)? If so, how should we explain that departure and its significance?
As you make sense of these questions, consider how Madison and Warren would have answered them. Importantly, ask yourself what the Revolution meant to Madison and Warren (based on what they wrote in their respective documents). Viewing the video lecture on the Constitution may provide useful information about the safeguards the Founding Fathers put in place as a means to check the "tyranny of the majority."
