The use of sexual expression in U.S. advertising can be traced back to the mid-1800s. Manufacturers realized early on that sensual illustrations of women attracted attention and generated sales. The general public since then, however, has had mixed feelings and often fought against the use of provocative, indecent, or even obscene imagery in ads. Sexual expression as an attention-grabbing strategy is effective and pervasive. The boundaries continue to be pushed in popular TV sitcoms and on Netflix and YouTube, but the internet is largely an untamed territory. While it harbors adult content, the devices to limit minors' access remain questionable. In this discussion, consider the use of sexual expression in the media. Think about your own experience as a consumer of goods and media and the advertising campaigns you have seen that use sexual expression. Consider ads for fragrances, beauty products, undergarments, and television shows.
