The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People
by Alan Brinkley: chapters 22, 23, 24
*number pages*
Purpose:
Understanding often requires empathy. This assignment focuses on empathizing with a society undergoing extreme transition- the United States in the 1920s.
For most urban areas, it was a time of economic boom, technological breakthroughs, rapid urbanization, radical new art forms, and lethal crime—a constant testing of boundaries. Much of that change was championed by those in their teens and twenties. Many left their countryside communities (some voluntarily, some involuntarily) and entered the cities into this unprecedented age of change. In response to this change, parts of society resisted. Some resisted violently. The drastic rate of change proved too much for certain elements of society to tolerate.
While never easy, the shift utterly reflected a new America and a new mindset, loathing a past so much that it rushed into a future that seemed at times to have no limit.
Project:
In this assignment, the year is 1928. You will look through the eyes of an adventurous twenty year old who is leaving their small Tennessee hometown of Dayton for the big city of New York. You will explain to your family, in a detailed letter (2-3 page minimum, plus separate Works Cited Page), why you are leaving. You are to provide details of what you wish to find when you get there, and what you hope to leave behind.
Instructions: Step 1, gather evidence (statistics, events, and examples) from your textbook and class lectures concerning the 1920s and the changing occurring in rural and urban societies.
Step 2, analyze the evidence. Understanding often requires empathy. This assignment focuses on empathizing with a society undergoing extreme transition. For most urban areas, the 1920s were a time of economic boom, technological breakthroughs, rapid urbanization, radical new art forms, and lethal crime – a constant testing of boundaries. Much of that change was championed by those in their teens and twenties. Many left their countryside communities (some voluntarily, some involuntarily) and entered the cities into this unprecedented age of change.
Step 3, communicate your findings honestly to yourself and others. Write a 2-3 page minimum paper showing your conclusions from your analyses, and the copious evidence (statistics, events, and examples) that led you to those conclusions. Then go to the “Course Work” tab, select “Assignments,” and submit your paper in the appropriate folder.
Note: In this paper, you will need to use facts and figures from the textbook readings and video lectures as source material to back up your statements. Anywhere you state facts, you must have an MLA style in-text parenthetical citation within the body of your paper.
