The purpose of this individual final exam is for you to apply knowledge learned in this course to analyze managerial issues related to information systems (IS) in real world organizations. This final exam is worth 200 points. Description Read "IT Doesn't Matter" by Carr published in Harvard Business Review in 2003. Then, write an essay based on what you learned this semester from the textbook, cases, supplemental readings, and your personal experience discussing his viewpoints and whether you agree or not. The final exam should be double-spaced with a 12-size font and 5-page maximum excluding the coverage page or references. Please cite references properly. In your essay, please answer the following questions: 1. What are proprietary vs. infrastructural technologies? Can you give some examples? Which technology was identified by Carr as being more important for a business to gain competitive advantage? Why? (40 points) 2. What technologies did Carr compare IT to when making his argument that IT is a commodity? Is IT similar to these technologies? Why or why not? (40 points) 3. What were the three reasons Carr cited for arguing that IT is a commodity? Do you agree? Why or why not? (40 points) 4. Now more than a decade after Carr's article was published, does IT matter? Why or why not? Relate to your experience and observations during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. (80 points) When answering the above questions: • Use the knowledge you learned this semester from the textbook, cases, supplemental readings, your personal work and life experience, as well as what you read in the article, to support your arguments. • You are encouraged to conduct additional research in professional magazines and databases to provide better insight into the issues. • In addition to stating the basic facts, you are required to provide an analysis of the issues and your take on the issues based on the knowledge we have learned in the class. • Divide your essay into different sections with the questions as the section headings. Deliverables • Your final exam is due on Tuesday July 5, 2022. Please submit your essay as a WORD file. • After your final exam is submitted, check back in a couple of hours and click on the link under "SA Report." You will be able to see a report on your essay identifying any possible source of plagiarism. Unless you use quotes, any sentence that is highlighted as being at least 90% similar to another source indicates a possible problem. Generic sentences and references are excluded. Revise your essay and resubmit as long as it is still before the deadline.
