Read the following paragraph written by Sybilla Beckmann: “I wrote Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers with Activities to help future elementary school teachers develop a deep understanding of the mathematics they will teach. People commonly think that elementary school mathematics is simple and that it shouldn’t require college-level study to teach it. But to teach mathematics well teachers must know more than just how to carry out basic mathematical procedures; they must be able to explain why mathematics works the way it does. Knowing why requires a much deeper understanding than knowing how. By learning to explain why mathematics works the way it does, teachers will learn to make sense of mathematics. I hope they will carry this “sense of making sense” into their own future classrooms.” Research and find at least two articles on the importance of why you as a math teacher must have a deep understanding of the “hows and whys” of mathematics. After you have found and read the articles, add the links to your articles in your discussion post. Please cite these articles in proper APA formatting. Write a short discussion post reflection (less than 450 words) summarizing the articles that you read and explaining what you have learned about the importance of why you as a math teacher must have a deep understanding of the “hows and whys” of mathematics.
