PLEASE DONOT USE ANY RESOURCES The toothed whales (suborder Odontoceti) are diverse. If we had more time, which of the following toothed whale group would you be most interested in learning about? One of the reasons for the great diversity of living things is due to a host of environmental/evolutionary variables leading to adaptation. Everything from dolphins and porpoises to the narwhal, orcas, and the sperm whale occupy the seemingly boundless habitat we call the ocean. The Odontocetes are truly high seas organisms that are very challenging to study. Like with the marine birds, competition can be a driving force for adaptation. Think about these differences as you explore the results of ‘competition in the past’. Use the lecture, text, and web to decide which of these groups you would have liked to explore in more detail. Poll Options A dolphins, porpoises, and orcas B beaked whales C narwhals and belugas D sperm whales
