Week 5 Discussions
Topic: closing the pay gap and equal pay legislation
The gender pay gap in the U.S. is discussed in this week's learning modules and in the
textbook. A variety of efforts have been made to close the gap around the world,
including the following:
Ontario, Canada, passed the Pay Equity Act. Here are the details:

In the United Kingdom, a gender pay gap reporting law recently started to produce
publicly available data, the implications of which are playing out. Here are some details:

In 2021, the Paycheck Fairness Act was introduced (again) in the U.S. Congress. The
House passed the bill. In 2022, the Senate still has not taken it up. Here are some
details on the bill:

Also, several states in the U.S. have passed and are implementing equal pay laws.
Please answer the following questions:
Do you think the U.S. should pursue these sorts of laws? Why or why not?
Please draw upon the Canadian, UK, and US bills/laws above in your response.
What features of these bills/laws do you find particularly appealing or
unappealing? Include something specific from at least two of the bills/laws in your
response.
Is passing laws enough? Should we work on other fronts, like unpaid domestic
labor (e.g., childcare, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) that disproportionately falls to women, inequitably paying part-time workers a lower hourly rate than full-time
workers for the same work, and a lack of work-place flexibility to accommodate
family/work balance? Please explain your thinking.
Take a moment to do a bit of research (via the library or via the internet). Find a
model city, state, country, or work place that has implemented something you
believe should be duplicated or scaled-up. Please share it with the class and
explain why you selected and how it will help close the pay gap.
