For this paper, you are asked explore trans identities as they are shaped by other factors like race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, religion, able-bodiedness, and/or mental ability, etc. Numerous readings and videos in the course take an intersectional approach to understanding. When you read these articles, pay attention to the way that authors explain how factors of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, sexuality in trans people’s lives, including their rights, access to services, social treatment and quality of life. In your paper, you can choose any topic to focus on. You can choose an event, and identity or group within the trans community. Or you can choose a social policy/activist topic like trans people serving in the military, or requiring sterilization for trans people undergo to access gender transition services. U.S. The possibilities are broad, so pick a topic you are truly interested in and want to learn more. You don’t have to confine yourself to the U.S., moreover. I encourage you can explore the topic in any country or culture. Whatever topic you choose, remember that the main requirement is you must consider how at one of these factors (i.e., race/ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, socioeconomic class, etc.) interact with and work together with gender to shape trans people’s choices, quality of life, and access to power.
